In Like a Lion…

Today started grey and cold. Rain in the afternoon turned to snow in the early evening. Baby has seen a little snow before but nothing that really stuck.

After dinner there was a good two-three inches. We opened the front door and let the baby grab a handful. He got a good-sized snowball and left a great handprint in the snow.

Of course he put it straight in his mouth. I would never let him eat it, really, it would lower his core body temperature. But a little snowball on the poor teething gums seemed to feel good and was equivalent to gumming a frozen banana. So I let him have it for a minute, then put the remainder in the sink.

After bathtime and jammies we settled into bed and watched March enter with a roar. The heavy clouds reflect orange city lights and occasionally ripple with blue electricity. The wind is whipping the ice-encrusted limbs of all the neighborhood trees. They move in slow motion like they are underwater, bending with the currents. Power is flickering. There’s probably four or five inches of snow. We are snug in our bed. Tomorrow we will bundle the baby into his snowsuit and he can venture out like a deep sea diver, exploring the world transformed in white.
