Fourth Trimester and the Bronx Cheer
Tomorrow our baby will be four months old and it is clear that he has started a new stage. From 0 to 3 months he was an infant. Just eat, sleep, poop. Now he is clearly a baby. Eat, sleep, poop, interact. He smiles socially, reaches for things, examines everything with his mouth and expresses preferences. He is learning new things at an exponential rate.
His latest verbal development is the raspberry. He makes a little bird mouth then gives a wet razz with his lips squeezed tight. Sometimes he does it for practice, over and over, perfecting his technique. Sometimes he does it expressively, letting us know how he feels about a situation or activity. Sometimes he wants a response, and when we “brrrrrrrrtt” back he laughs with delight. For such a tiny guy, he communicates amazingly well.
