Budapest: Zoo

Another good bedtime spoiled by a 10 pm wake up. But he fell back to sleep and was up a little sooner in the morning. We went down for breakfast, and while I was at the buffet, a waiter brought Lex hot chocolate. He looked so grown up. It made me proud. At the table we had conversations like:

“Excuse me Momma. I would like to talk to you about something.”

Followed by fantastic imaginative stories with heroes and villains. Fire, fighting, scary things. Ultimate triumph for Batman aka Lex. A few made-up words which he would define if I asked.

We walked to the Oktagon metro stop and rode to the Zoo. Saw harbor seals and penguins. Alligators, crocodiles and all sorts of lizards. Toucan and lemur out of exhibits, close enough to touch. A family of gorilla, with baby on momma’s back. Climbed on a dragon sculpture. Zebra, elephant, hippos, flamingos, giraffes. We hand-fed the camels with 100 HUF of zoo food pellets. Brown bear, tiger, meercats, wallaby, capybara. Climbed on wooden animal sculptures and played on the slide in a sandbox opposite the mandrills. Scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbills, cormorants and pelicans. The butterfly exhibit was under construction.

We climbed a small rock mountain like Montana Johnson, played in a pirate ship playground, and took several breaks for water, ice cream and Spider-Man candy. I was pleased with the family-friendly WCs which had tiny kinder-toaletts in the women’s room.

It was late when we got back to the hotel. After nap it was dinner time and we took Zac to Mezza. A short wait for an outside table. Pretzels as a bar snack. Delicious vegetable lasagna in spring onion sauce for me, fish with new potatoes for Zac, and a plate of “salty cucumber” pickle spears served on ice for Lex.

Dark blue sky as we walked home.
