Son of Fishgirl

We started swim lessons at the JCC. The class is for kids from 12-24 months. There are 9 kids total. Bigger kids and smaller kids. Girls and boys. With their dads, with their moms. Kids who are brave about getting their head wet and kids who cry. All kinds of kids, but I am pretty sure Lex is the best one.

Swim coach Kelly leads us in a circle. We introduce our kids, ourselves. Older siblings wait by the side of the pool. We sing songs, splash, kick, dig with our arms. “Kids in the pool go swim swim swim” to the tune of “Wheels on the bus.”

Babies hold on to the side, climb out, jump back in to “Humpty Dumpty.” Lex is a natural at climbing and is the first on out every time. We go hand over hand along the edge singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” Kelly throws toys in the deep end and the toddlers dog paddle to them. We hold the toys up high and lean back singing “Twinkle, twinkle.” Almost floating.

And back in the shallow end we drop rings and recover them, before filing over to the purple dino baby slide. We take turns, our half hour is up, the next class is waiting.
