Birthday Boy

Yesterday we celebrated Lex’s first journey around the sun by having cupcakes for breakfast. We have been practicing having him blow out a candle and he finally did it by himself. We were so proud. His Jaja sent birthday cards and we opened three at the breakfast table. One of them plays the music from Charlie Brown’s dance party when you turn a little crank. All through breakfast I cranked away like an organ grinder’s monkey. We all danced together in the kitchen and Lex thought it was hysterical.

Instead of a morning shower, I took a bath with the baby before work. Dadda treated us to a cascade of bubbles. Blowing bubbles over the bathtub is all the fun with a fraction of the mess.

At daycare everyone sang as we came in, and there was a “Happy Birthday Lex” sign on the door when I picked him up.

Dinner was from his favorite Vietnamese restaurant. He loves tofu and broccoli. I gave him one of my crispy vegetarian spring rolls as a special treat and he finished it all but one bite. We told him how special Mekong restaurant is to us. We went there for lunch after we got married in our back yard. We eat there most anniversaries. And when I was in the hospital after he was born, the first food I had brought in (once I could have solids) was their grilled tofu rice noodle bowl.

We opened another musical card from Jaja and that was the soundtrack for dinner. We danced some more and then went to bed early and he nursed a lot during the night. His present to me was sleeping in til seven.

Big man. A year and a day. Starting another journey around the sun. I am so proud.
