Galoshes

Our lot is located in the City of Richmond, and we have the maximum number if woodland creatures allowed within the city limits. There are mourning doves, bluejays and robins after the worms, a turtle in the trough pond, squirrels and woodpeckers in the maple, a chipmunk in the woodpile and a big bunny in the vegetable patch. If we could, we would raise chickens.

Today it rained and Momma weeded the back flowerbed. Bunny watched from a safe distance. Baby watched bunny, Dada watched baby, and kitteh kept an eye on everyone from inside where it was not so damp.

The tree peony is blooming. And the bearded irises out front. Daffs and tulips are finished but the big dragon arum in the back is getting ready for the annual Memorial Day bloom. Creeping phlox blooms beneath it. The blackberry bushes are doing well and one blueberry seems to have survived. We have lots of peas we never planted and some wildflower mix I am tempted to scatter indiscriminately. Everything that has fallen from the birdfeeder has sprouted, and the compost bin is glad to have something other than fall leaves and winter vegetable peelings.

I came in from gardening smelling like sweet earth and rain. The baby was already down for his afternoon nap. I laid down beside him with my good outdoor scents and he nursed for a long time in his sleep.

I want to get him tiny tools, baby gloves and a little watering can. We can work in the garden together. He can feed the turtle. We can wear matching galoshes when it rains.
