Diving - Pirates - Ardastra - Paradise Island
Thursday Morning Another morning of thunderstorms. The weather clears by afternoon, but this morning was a doozy. Thunder, lightning, sideways rain. After breakfast I waved bye-bye to the baby and ran back to the room for the last few things. By the time I came back the bus to Stuart Cove’s Dive Center was waiting and Zac had already handed young Alexander over to his babysitter,...

Surrey with the Fringe on Top
Sunrise walk on the beach, shower, breakfast, jitney bus downtown. Exploring, blistering walk, fighting with the baby to leave his sunhat on, stopping for ice cream. Think the baby is still too young for chocolate, but give him a taste of my cone anyway. Find a changing table in Starbucks, his outfit is a chocolately mess. New onesie, walk along the cruise ship docks, haggle for a surrey ride. ...

Orange Hill
The beach is right down the hill. The sand is soft and white, the sea is blue and green. We are the only people in sight. We build sandcastles and dip our toes in the water. After morning nap we catch a jitney bus into town. The cruise ships tower over the pink buildings. Baby tries pigeon peas and rice for lunch at the Bahamian Kitchen. We tour the library, go on the roof for a stunning view of...

FLL-NAS
Breakfast at Flakowitz, packing, lunch, drive to Ft. Lauderdale International Airport. Show our passports, shoes off through security. They didn’t even want to check the bottles of breastmilk or the ice cubes in my little cooler. At gate C4 an hour ahead and the plane for our flight is delayed. Baby plays peek-a-boo with the gate agent. She crouches behind the row of seats, springs up, he...

Del Ray Beach
Up early this morning. Diaper bag, sand pail, metal detectors. Off to the beach. Baby sat on a towel and ate sand. Momma sat on the towel and tried to keep the sand out of the baby. Dada took pictures. Grandfolks hunted for lost metal. When the bug was totally filthy we washed him in the sink at the public restroom across the street. Dada tried metal detecting and found a little foil. Momma...

Florida
Visiting Jaja in Florida. There are heaps of toys. Wooden blocks, foam blocks, bouncy ball, two string balls. A robot dog and a radio-controlled tractor. An alligator that rolls and chomps. A farm vehicle complete with cow, farmer, and a pig that pops out of the haystack. Squirty bath toys, sandy beach toys. And a ride-on airplane. It has a tiny Elmo pilot who steers, big airplane eyes that move,...

Flight 1281
I love JetBlue. Checking in our bags I asked the agent if we were sitting together. We were not, but he moved us to a bulkhead row, seats 1a and b. We took off the baby’s shoes going through security. They tested his bottle of breastmilk with the little paper strip they hold over the open container, then add chemicals to the strip to see if it changes. At the gate we were standing front and...

Pack Mule
We love to travel. When I was pregnant people told me I would have to settle down now. That with a baby I wouldn’t be able to travel any more. I don’t know why not. Seems like you just need to be a little more prepared. We are going to the Bahamas by way of Florida. Leaving Friday. So we spent all week packing. First the underwater camera gear. Housing, strobe, cords, batteries....

Celebration
I had a great birthday, with lots of well wishes at work, singing phonecalls and messages, cards, cake, presents and a special flower delivery of a live gardenia plant already in bloom. The boy skipped his afternoon nap and slept from 7-9 pm and then decided to say up til 11. We let him join the party and he was cheerful and fun. Everyone loved the Cuatro Leches cake topped with fresh...

Capital Ale House
After work I picked up the baby for a going-away party for a co-worker. We sat outside by the pond and the breeze blew droplets from the fountain on us. The ducks waddled around looking for frittes. The baby pulled moss and diets from between the bricks and found a stick to eat. I traded him for the lime garnish from my cranberry juice and he chewed it happily, impressing everyone with his radical...

Week 40
This is a big week for celebrations. Today Lex is 40 weeks, a bookend to the 40 weeks I carried him. He is two and a half times his birth weight and half again as tall. He is learning at an exponential rate and needs lots of sleep to process his new experiences. When he is awake he goes 100 miles an hour. He has 5 teeth through and 3 more on the way. He is starting to grow some hair but it is...

Cinco de Mayo
Our pal Cooper was born 05-05-05. Today we took him four red helium balloons for his birthday. Dada also bought two balloons for the bug. The green one started losing helium pretty quickly, but the orange one is all kinds of fun. Bug pulls the strings and is delighted when they bob and float. Happy Cinco de Mayo baby.

Toy
Baby is developing language. He babbled very early on, agoo, agua, un. English, Spanish and French! His core words are Dada and Momma. He imitates our conversation, joins in with “blah blah blah.” When he is finished eating he sometimes repeats “all done.” I have even heard him say it spontaneously a couple of times when be was finished with other activities. He said...

Galoshes
Our lot is located in the City of Richmond, and we have the maximum number if woodland creatures allowed within the city limits. There are mourning doves, bluejays and robins after the worms, a turtle in the trough pond, squirrels and woodpeckers in the maple, a chipmunk in the woodpile and a big bunny in the vegetable patch. If we could, we would raise chickens. Today it rained and Momma weeded...

Spoon
Baby has three teeth and three more all coming in at once. He is teething hard. We were in the yard today and he was chewing on everything so I plucked a stalk of mint to keep him occupied with the non-poisonous side of the garden. After a little time outdoors, lawn mowing, hammock, the rain drove us in. I was playing on the floor with him and letting him teeth on a metal spoon. A friend had...
