Pinwheel
Nearly 8 months old and we have entered the restless sleeper stage. He snuggles, nurses, sleeps all cuddly for a bit. Then he half-wakes, flips over, pivots on his shoulder and rolls. His feet stay by my belly, but he goes from parallel to perpendicular in a blink. Then he pinwheels some more and suddenly he is caddywhumpus. His head at the southwest corner, his feet north, the pillow to the east....

All Done!
The report from daycare today: when the baby finishes eating he says “All done!” Miss Melissa says it first. “All done?” and he replies, “All done!” She has been working with him on this and wasn’t sure if she heard him say it yesterday, but her mother came over and confirmed. He is saying a phrase. All done! At home we had been saying,...

Robin Hood
The boy is still a baldie. His JaJa says the later you get your hair the longer you keep it. But in the meantime it makes it difficult for me to give him adorable soapy hairstyles in the bath. The alternative is to have him wear a cute wet hat. So while he plays with elaborate bathtoys designed for squirting (goes in the mouth), stacking (or, y’know, mouth), and sieving (mouth), I play mad...

When The Moon Hits Your Eye
Tonight was pizza night. Daddy made dough from scratch and Momma chopped the toppings. Green pepper, red onion, fresh garlic, cremini mushrooms. Daddy kneaded the dough. Bug floured up his hands and helped out, pinching and laughing at the silky soft feel. The oven heated to 550. Then while Daddy tossed the crust, Bug danced around the kitchen with Momma, singing and giggling. We danced cheek...

March Madness
Tonight was the sixth annual Ironworks March Madness party, a huge basketball extravaganza with food and drink, clients and employees. And huge televisions showing the game. I made the best possible use of my time, out of the house without the baby: I spent the evening telling anyone who would listen about my boy. I mentioned how advanced he is, such a champion crawler, what he says, how much...

Monkey Feet
Fast asleep. Bare feet sticking out of his jammies, chubby legs pointed up in the air. Monkey toes clasped together like tiny hands. He is going to outgrow this before I am ready to give it up.

Kissy Face
One of our favorite games is “kiss the baby.” Momma kisses him, Dada kisses him, and best of all, Baby-in-the-mirror kisses him with a big open slobbermouth kiss. That mirror baby is in the bathroom medicine cabinets, the shiny microwave door, in soft books and toys. There are even tiny still-picture babies to kiss inside the iPhone. But the best life-size version is the shiny...

Sling Baby
They say sling babies are better socialized because they spend more time at eye level with adults, learning the faces and gestures we make with each other. We have loved the Moby sling as a front carrier, but now Lex likes to sit on a hip and the Moby is bulky worn that way. I had been in the market for a side style sling, and a coworker offered me hers now that her kids are too big. It is by...

Feed Me, Seymour!
Wonderful weekend. The baby has started eating like a champ, really chowing down. He had been loving the regular fresh steamed greenbeans, but they were a little tough for him to gum through. At daycamp Ms. Melissa gave him canned greenbeans and the are the perfect texture for him. Easy to hold and feed himself, but soft enough to fall apart when he gums it. He now eats breakfast, morning snack,...

Supermom and Mr. Incredible
We both work full time, have hobbies and love the baby. Apparently the key to doing it all is to make good decisions, delegate and pick your battles. I am responsible for staying healthy and happy myself. Brush teeth, floss. Neti pot for the sinuses, raw honey for the scar. Wobble chair, thoracic roll, lumbar fulcra. Pre-natal vitamins with DHA. Packing a lunch for work. I am also responsible...

Lions and tigers and monkeys, oh my!
The light from the baby’s glow-in-the-dark pajamas is keeping me awake. All his jungle friends with glowing eyes peering at me in the dark. I see the jaws of the crocodile, the tusks of the elephant. His feet twitch in his sleep, padding through the dense foliage in the forest of his mind. Have sweet curly-tail monkey dreams little boy.

In Like a Lion...
Today started grey and cold. Rain in the afternoon turned to snow in the early evening. Baby has seen a little snow before but nothing that really stuck. After dinner there was a good two-three inches. We opened the front door and let the baby grab a handful. He got a good-sized snowball and left a great handprint in the snow. Of course he put it straight in his mouth. I would never let him...

Camp Weaver-Powell
He doesn’t know it yet, but Lex had his last day at daycare on Friday. He had a fine time there, but it was hard on his momma to have an extra half hour on the way to and from work. Starting Monday his dad will walk him over two blocks to Camp Weaver-Powell. Our friend Melissa is staying home with their second daughter, and she will take Lex as well. I am so excited about it. She will...

Love Me Tender
It is a grey rainy cold morning and the whole family is snuggled in the king-size bed. Daddy is under the sheets on his side, Momma and baby co-sleeping on top of the covers with their own blanket. Kitteh leaving her usual spot at the foot of the bed to patrol for some petting if it seems like her people are awake. The baby is seven months now. February was too short, but we celebrated his...
